A new digital version of The Journal, the North East's leading
morning newspaper, launched this week.
The Trinity Mirror daily is among the first major metropolitan
newspapers in the
UK to launch an
e-edition.
The e-edition looks exactly the same as the newsprint version
and can be accessed through www.thejournal.co.uk. Users can turn the
pages on screen, just as they would with the newspaper. They can also zoom in
and out to determine how big or small they want to view the type.
The online version provides up-to-the-minute news and the day's
edition is available from first thing in the morning, before most newsagents
open for business.
Anyone with a computer and broadband can access The Journal
online for a monthly subscription of £9 - a saving of 17% on the newsprint
version.
The aim of the e-edition is to grow The Journal's readership by
targeting businesses, people in rural areas and ex-pats, as well as those who
would prefer to receive and read their news via the internet.
Brian Aitken, Editor of The Journal, said: "The launch of The
Journal e-edition is one of the most exciting editorial developments I have been
involved in.
"Many people already rely on the internet for their news - but
this is not like any other online news service.
"The e-edition of The Journal looks exactly the same as the
newsprint version and it's so quick and easy to use."
This is the latest in a number of recent digital initiatives
around Trinity Mirror's regional newspapers.
The Journal e-edition is a six-month pilot. A second phase of
the venture will see video streaming whereby innovative software will allow
video clips to be played by clicking on adverts, graphics and pictures.
