Trinity Mirror's Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Daily Post enjoyed
record sales increases in the wake of the Champions League victory.
More than 66,000 extra copies of the Echo were sold on Thursday
- the day after the match - which represented a lift of 46% compared to the
previous week. The day's sale was more than 206,000 copies.
And on Friday, when the paper carried a 16-page supplement
devoted to the team's victory parade, an extra 36,000 copies of the paper were
sold compared to the previous week.
Saturday also showed a record increase, jumping 20,000 compared
to the previous year.
The Echo had launched a major sales drive in the wake of the
victory, printing thousands of extra copies and producing special editions and
picture pull-outs following the dramatic win in
Istanbul .
Jon Brown, Acting Editor of the Echo, believes the sales lifts
were the result of real teamwork across all departments.
He said: "We focused very clearly on ensuring maximum
availability of copies at the right time of the day. So on the Thursday, for
instance, we printed a special 6.30am
edition and made sure we had a highly visible presence at the city's airport to
catch returning fans.
"It was one of those stories which took on a life of its own and
grew through the day until we reached the stage where 750,000 people were on the
streets of Liverpool to witness the victory parade.
"The momentum was such that I took a decision at 10pm on Thursday night to put Friday's paper up
in size and had to scramble a team of journalists and paper planners to
repaginate and work on a special 16pp victory parade pull-out."
The Liverpool Daily Post increased its sale by over 100% after
the print run of the morning title was doubled to 50,000 copies.
And the Post received a further significant sales uplift of 59%
on the Friday.
Rob Irvine, Acting Editor of the Post, said: "This is a
fantastic achievement by the editorial and sales teams. We hoped the figures
would be strong but knew we were up against front page coverage of the match by
all the national titles.
"People in Merseyside have clearly looked to the Liverpool Daily
Post as one of the best places to read about Liverpool FC's triumph. It's an
edition I know many of them will be keeping to treasure for years to
come."
