Editorial Training

Getting a job as a trainee reporter with our titles can be achieved in two ways.
The first involves a direct approach to the editor of a specific paper. If selected for interview applicants can expect to sit a series of standard written tests and to take part in group and face-to-face interviews.
Successful candidates will either be sent to Newcastle to attend one of the twice yearly, 16-week Press Association Foundation courses, or they will attend a series of two-day roadshow training sessions during their traineeships. All trainees are expected to sit preliminary examinations in law, government and shorthand before eventually taking the Trinity Mirror Certificate, which if they pass confirms them as senior journalists.
The second route involves applying directly to the Press Association Training centre in Newcastle.
We recruit twice a year for courses starting in August and January, the closing dates for applications being the end of May and the end of October respectively.
Candidates need to be of the highest standard and to be successful you will need talent, an understanding of newspapers and a portfolio of cuttings that demonstrates you have already made a strong commitment to journalism.
