Health and Safety
Throughout 2008, the Group has maintained its commitment to achieving good health and safety performance. In spite of substantial reorganisation and a number of large engineering and construction projects the total number of accidents across the Group has again reduced.
In recognition of improved performance in prior years we were awarded our fourth successive ROSPA Occupational Health and Safety Gold Award. Commenting on the award David Rawlins, ROSPA Awards Manager, said: "Trinity Mirror has shown a commitment to protecting the health and wellbeing of its employees and others. We hope that other businesses and organisations will follow its lead and strive for continual improvement in health and safety management."
Health and safety initiatives
In pursuit of continual improvement the following initiatives were undertaken during 2008:
- In parallel with a major repressing project at the Watford printing plant, systems and procedures were revised and updated to achieve a certificate of conformity with OHSAS 18001, the internationally recognised health and safety management systems specification. The Birmingham and Cardiff printing plants were audited for compliance in the year and achieved certification in January 2009;
- A programme of independent regulatory compliance audits was completed at the printing plants, leading to reports being issued and recommendations followed up. Scheduled health and safety audits were also carried out at some office establishments by in house health and safety specialists;
- Through direct involvement of the Group Health and Safety Manager the Company has supported the HSE Printing Industry Advisory Committee in their efforts to improve health and safety in the printing industry. Safety campaigns were held on topics such as work related upper limb disorders and the prevention of slips, trips and falls;
- New and revised policies and procedures were introduced throughout the Group covering the following topics:
1. fire safety
2. mobile phones
3. lone working
4. new and expectant mothers; and
- Health and safety developments were monitored through the Group Health and Safety Risk Management Forum, with follow up action where necessary.
